Georgia TRiO will conduct a Student Support Services (SSS) Proposal Writing Workshop at Atlanta Metropolitan State College in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, October 24, 2014.
This workshop is ideal for both beginning and experienced grant writers. Topics discussed will include:
Using group exercises, thoughtful discussion and experienced faculty this workshop will assist participants in writing a competitive grant proposal. Critical areas of the proposal will be dissected and reviewed carefully with participants as well as helpful hints learned from past competitions.
Registration is from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Program will begin on October 24th at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 3:00 p.m.

Workshop Presenter(s) Camille Smith Zeigler- (Retired) TS, UB, UBMS, and EOC Director Cheryl Arnold- UB, UBMS, VUB and EOC Executive Director Collectively they have over fifty years of experience in the implementation, management, supervision, and evaluation of federal (TRIO) and state funded educational and career opportunity programs. Ms. Zeigler and Ms. Arnold have very successful records of securing over $100 million for new and continuation TRIO (TS, SSS, UB, UBMS, VUB and EOC) grant proposals for colleges, universities, and non-profit agencies.
General Information The TRIO programs are funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965 and currently include seven different programs targeting educational levels from 6th grade through a post-baccalaureate degree.
The federal TRIO programs were established by Congress to help low-income and first-generation students prepare and succeed in programs of postsecondary education. Student Support Services (SSS) - assists participants to successfully complete an undergraduate program of study through academic advisement, counseling, and information on financial aid.
Program Description Through a grant competition, funds are awarded to institutions of higher education to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and to motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. Student Support Services (SSS) projects also may provide grant aid to current SSS participants who are receiving Federal Pell Grants (# 84.063). The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants.
Types of Projects All SSS projects must provide: academic tutoring, which may include instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, science, and other subjects; advice and assistance in postsecondary course selection, assist student with information on both the full range of student financial aid programs, benefits and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and assistance in completing financial aid applications. Education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy and assist students in applying for admission to graduate and professional programs; and assist students enrolled in two-year institutions and applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in four-year programs. The SSS projects may also provide individualized counseling for personal, career, and academic information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint students with career options; exposure to cultural events and academic programs not usually available; mentoring programs, securing temporary housing during breaks for students who are homeless youths and students who are in foster care or are aging out of the foster care system. |
